Tam Lin (Davey Arthur, Ireland)
Tam Lin (also known as The Glasgow Reel) (Davey Arthur, Ireland). Davey Arthur recorded Tam Lin in 1977 with The Fureys. It became a session standard in the Baltimore everywhere back in the early 1980's. I learned it on fiddle in Dm (and Am) but moved it to Em at some point in the late 1980's - to fit the HD a bit better. I recorded the tune back in 1997 on Walking Stones with Laura Risk and Robin Bullock. The alternate titles, The Glasgow Reel and The Howling Wind are misnomers. Tam Lin is not hard to play but offers a vast variety of opportunities for learning! In these lessons, we cover the following:
- Seeing a chord progression in the framework of the melody - i.e. don't just learn the notes but see the chords
- E aeolian, what this means, and how this helps us learn
- Playing with drive and accent shifts
- Left lead - and the advantages it provides for adding chords
- Using the full range of the instrument
- Bouncing with both hands to ornament
- How to create multiple effective backups
- How to create a harmony
- How to create LOTS of variations
