Saudade de Uberaba (Alberto Calçada, (1929-1983), Brazil).

One evening many years ago, I was searching for a recording of a stellar Brazilian piece (Cascade of Tears) on YouTube. I was all set to teach the piece to one of my students (and long-time soccer buddy) Gary Shayne, who loved Spanish guitar and Brazilian music. I came across “Saudade” and immediately realized I was in for a VERY long night of listening and deciphering! This is a challenging but spectacular piece of music. We work through the hammering rationale, tackling the chromatics of the piece, as we cover the melody phrase by phrase. We tackle the theory behind the chord progression, and an arrangement that uses a wide variety of arranging techniques to highlight the wonderful chord changes. Chord concepts include secondary dominants, diminished 7th chords, the parallel minor and more. There is so much going on in this tune! These lessons will make it accessible.
