The Parting Glass (Trad, 17th century, Scotland/Ireland). This piece is widely beloved in both Ireland and Scotland. You can go do a rabbit hole with this checking out versions from The Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem, Ed Sheeran, Sinead O’Connor, Hozier, or Celtic Women. Even Bob Dylan based “The Restless Farewell” on the song. And you might know the piece from the movie “Waking Ed Devine”. This beautiful piece gives us a great opportunity to learn to play with patience! We cover the following: the aeolian mode (Em), the rationale for the chord progression, the hammering (tackling the melody phrase by phrase), and three arrangements that use many techniques/ideas (also walking you through every phrase and every idea), and practice tracks. I present two accompaniments intended for duo hammered dulcimer but will work with any instrument. One version features plucking (but can be played).
