Out from the Shadows (U.S., Ken Kolodner & Mary Lynn Michal)

Out from The Shadows (Ken Kolodner & Mary Lynn Michal, 2020) Mary Lynn asked me to write a tune for Adie Carlyle who was a student of mine for years and was a huge Sandbridge devotee. Adie loved minor tunes so that was the first requirement. We chose Am for the A part and started the B part with a D major chord: hence “A-D”! Adie often used the term “ish” – we ran with that with the parallel major/minor D to Dm movement (“D-ish”) in the B part. Adie always preferred to be in the background. In the last year of Adie’s life, she seemed to re-think that position. The title refers to Adie’s coming “Out from the Shadows.” We cover the following concepts:

• An exploration of the aeolian mode
• The theory of the chord progression including the use of a dominant 7th chord and the parallel minor/major
• Multiple arranging ideas and techniques
• Multiple backup ideas
