The Oklahoma Rooster (Old time, Oklahoma, late 1800’s).

This is a great tune for demonstrating the advantages of a left-hand lead, for demonstrating how to embellish fast moving fiddle tunes, and for thinking and seeing chords. Likely originally in the key of C, I learned this in the more fiddle-friendly key of D from The Critton Hollow String Band with fiddler Joe Herrman and hammered dulcimer player Sam Herrman. I recorded the tune many years ago with Helicon. We work through the hammering rationale, the melody, and a wide variety of arranging ideas and variations.
