Kelvingrove (The Summons) (Traditional, Scotland)

In choosing this lovely piece (which doubles as a hymn), I attempted to demonstrate how to explore chord choices beyond the obvious and to explore a range of arranging ideas. A goal that I have for every tune is to be able to play a full arrangement, at least one approach backup AND to fully understand the chord progression as the glue that holds it all together. A lot goes into creating a successful and interesting chord progression (knowing what is available to you, where we are going and where we came from, what is happening in the bass line etc.). I love the rising bass line in the B part (Am to Bm to C with the Bm against the C melody note) and the suspensions! The chord progression is a super illustration that no chord can be viewed in isolation but must be seen as part of a complete story. Finally, there is a bonus: the arrangement works great in two octaves!
