Elzic's Farewell (Harvey G. Elswick, U.S.)
Elzic's Farewell (Harvey G. Elswick, (1838-1915), Kentucky, old-time)
This fun classic in the old-time repertoire gives us the opportunity to cover left-hand lead, swing, accent shifts, and much more. We work through the hammering, the melody, the rationale for the chord progression, a basic arrangement, and a backup. The backup includes a variety of ideas including several “vamps” and mini arpeggios to create a bassline. Our first arrangement includes chords, drones, and syncopations. We go significantly beyond the first arrangement with a pile of variations. This tune is an excellent exploration into the Dorian mode that behaves a bit like Aeolian. We will explain what that means in the lessons! NOTE: There are many versions of Elzic’s. This version is a “festival version” meaning it is what I have heard played most frequently. Sometimes the parts are sequenced differently but this version is relatively standard.
