The challenge in embellishing this beautiful O’Carolan tune is that the melody is highly structured without much space. Still, there is much that we can add in terms of bringing out the chord progression and creating some subtle variations. The tonal center in this piece is also somewhat ambiguous, shifting from G major to E minor. Our first task is to develop a few alternative chord progressions. I introduce a variety of arranging ideas (two, three and four note chords, valley rolls, bounced triplets, arpeggio fills, melodic runs, tremolos, melodic variations). This tune is well worth the effort necessary for mastery!
