Autumn in Paris (John Sheehan, Ireland)

Hold on tight for this wild ride of chord changes! This is one challenging tune but well-worth the effort. I walk you through the theory that infuses this piece – including major 7ths, minor 7ths, lots of secondary dominants and diminished 7th chords. And we work through the melody, a backup, and a variety of arranging ideas. This will require patience and determination, but you will learn a lot and be rewarded with a special piece. I learned this tune at The Swannanoa Gathering many years ago at a super late-night jam. The jam was winding down with just fiddler Randal Bays, a harpist, a dog sleeping in the harp case, and me on hammered dulcimer. We were playing our favorite slow tunes and Randal played this gem. A few years later, back in 1999, I recorded this gorgeous piece with fiddler Laura Risk and guitarist Joseph Sobol on A Roof for the Rain. Thanks goes out to Mary Lynn Michal for urging me to re-learn it! It was written by John Sheehan who played with The Dubliners for 50+ years. Here is our take on the piece from our recording. Over the years playing with Laura, we tweaked the chords further. Watch on YouTube.
